Its oval, finely toothed leaves have a dark purplish-bronze color when they unfurl in early spring, with a white downy underside. As spring becomes summer, its leaves change to medium green with a gentle sheen. Its summer canopy provides a soothing, light-dappled shade. In late spring to early summer, it produces a small fruit. The fruit emerges a pinkish-red before ripening to a dark reddish-purple. The edible juicy fruit has a taste similar to that of a blueberry.
